GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely available open source application for creating and manipulating graphic images that runs on Linux, other Unix -based operating systems, and also on Windows and Mac OS X. GIMP is distributed under licensing terms defined by the GNU project. You are likely to find GIMP as one of the optional. GIMP (/ ɡ ɪ m p / GHIMP; GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free and open-source raster graphics editor used for image manipulation (retouching) and image editing, free-form drawing, transcoding between different image file formats, and more specialized tasks. GIMP is released under GPLv3+ license and is available for Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows.
Introduction to GIMP¶
- For several years now, GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) has been one of the best free alternatives to commercial image editors like Photoshop and Corel Draw. It's a free and open-source multiplatform app that lets you do almost the same things you would do on a paid software. You can use GIMP to edit images and to create new ones.
- Why we love it: GIMP — short for GNU Image Manipulation Program — has long been a contender for the best free image editor. In fact, it’s been consistently ranked the best free photo editor for Mac, or close to it, since not long after its debut in 1996(!).
GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.
It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.
GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.
GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X.
